Photographer gathers reports to show women birth options

Brazil is world champion in caesarean sections. In the private network, about 80% of births are performed by caesarean section

The photographer Lela Beltrão is known for her beautiful photos of humanized delivery . His work has already been exhibited in the Salon of Contemporary Art of the Carousel of the Louvre, a commercial gallery that is in the basement of the museum that takes the same name in Paris.

Now, Lela decided to gather reports of women who had their births recorded by the photographer’s camera.

According to her, the goal is to encourage through reports other women to know about the possibilities of childbirth. “The reports are rich to encourage pregnant women to question themselves, to realize what choices are possible.”

Brazil is world champion in caesarean sections. In the private network, about 80% of births are performed by cesarean section , a rate well above the 15% indicated by the World Health Organization (WHO) . The National Agency for Supplementary Health (ANS) launched in 2016 the project Parto Adequado to reduce resistance to normal birth. The decision whether or not to have a cesarean section is for the woman. The ANS recommendation is that the cesarean section be done when there is a medical recommendation for this type of surgery.

Lela says she feels grateful for the women who agreed to share their birth reports with the world. “It’s a lot of generosity when a mother shares her birth report and the photos of that intimate moment.”

One of the reports is from Fernanda de Carvalho, who had Tom in September of 2016, with 40 weeks and three days of gestation, in a home birth. Two days before she took a long walk through the neighborhood, went to a barbecue, ate two baião and asked for her son’s arrival.

The next day, a Monday – the first one on maternity leave – she took a walk to give ‘a little kick’ for her son to be born. It was 11:30 when his bag broke. At one o’clock on Tuesday, contractions became more and more intense and rhythmic.

Already in the final phase, she admits that she thought about giving up. “The dreaded and long-awaited expulsion had begun. I thought about giving up, but I knew I was short of it. In my head there was only one thought: you know how to be born and I know how to give birth, “wrote Fernanda.

Tom was born at 5:40 p.m., weighing 3.185 kg and measuring 48.5 centimeters ( read Fernanda’s complete account ).

The birth reports collected by Lela can be read here .
